Product Information

Accelerated Bridge Construction (ABC) is bridge construction that uses innovative planning, design, materials, and construction methods in a safe and cost-effective manner to reduce the onsite construction time that occurs when building new bridges or replacing and rehabilitating existing bridges.

ABC improves:

  • Site Constructability
  • Total project delivery time
  • Work-zone safety for the traveling public

ABC reduces:

  • Traffic Impacts
  • Onsite construction time
  • Weather-related time delays

A common reason to use ABC is to reduce mobility impacts because the safety of the traveling public and the flow of the transportation network are directly impacted by onsite construction related activities.

Other common and equally viable reasons to use ABC deal with site constructability issues. Oftentimes long detours, costly use of a temporary structure, remote site locations, and limited construction periods present opportunities where the use of ABC methods can provide more practical and economical solutions to those offered if conventional construction methods were used.

Crane lifts a large concrete girder onto supporting columns at an outdoor bridge or overpass construction site, with an excavator and forested hillside in the background. Large concrete drainage culvert under construction at a worksite with construction equipment and a worker in a safety vest visible in the background. Heavy construction equipment, including a crane and drill rig, works on a highway bridge support structure surrounded by concrete barriers and dirt piles. Overhead view of a crane lowering a large concrete I-beam onto a construction site, with a worker in a hard hat standing near red lifting machinery on concrete slabs. Crane lowers a large concrete dam section onto a flatbed truck near a reservoir under construction. Two concrete bridge pier caps are being lowered into place by cranes as workers guide the placement on a muddy construction site surrounded by forest.
